You Don’t Have to Get Back on the Seminar Marketing Treadmill

Jennifer Goddard, CEO
Jennifer Goddard, CEO

I just got off the phone with someone who is anxious about ramping up his seminar marketing again …

I mean he has anxiety about it.

He’s starting to see the ads in his market again … free lunch, free dinner, even free bottles of wine …

Come learn about wills and trusts …
The carnival call resumes as pandemic restrictions subside.

He’s worried that if he doesn’t jump back into the fray, he will lose out. But at the same time, he is not excited about buying a new list, a new advertising campaign, packing up a mini-van full of presentation materials and hauling assets from restaurant to country club to public library again … night after night … day after day … just to give the same spiel over and over to a handful of people with tight wallets.

I feel his pain.

I know, all too well, what it’s like to be on the seminar marketing circuit. After all, every marketing guru on the planet says seminars are the e-ticket to a seven-figure law firm … right?

I bought that line, too.

Traveling from dinner to luncheon to nursing home lobby, the local senior center … and beyond.

It was exhausting. …

And … it was boring beyond belief to give the exact same spiel twice a day, twice a week, week after week … answering the same questions over and over … making the same small talk … eating the same rubber chicken and chugging the same too-sweet punch.

It also ate way too much of my time …

I missed my kids’ football games in the winter, their baseball games in the summer, and far too many family times year-round.

And … since we spent all our time planning, promoting and presenting seminars … most weekends were spent playing catch-up on the real work of running a law firm … appointments stacked up, drafting got behind, asset transfers seemed like a never-ending annoyance to wrap up …

And we did it all for pennies-on-the-dollar of what we should have been charging!

Meanwhile … the costs just kept going up … and up … and up … Printing costs. Postage costs. Expensive dinners. Overtime for staff.

Not to mention the toll it was taking on us just to keep up the never-ending grind … because the MINUTE you stop doing seminars … revenue comes to a screeching halt …

That’s what this guy is anxious about … he really does not want to go back to that lifestyle … working so hard for so little …

That life doesn’t look anything at all like the one he imagined when he started law school … when he graduated with honors … passed the bar … and embarked on what he thought would be a satisfying and rewarding career in a noble profession …

Reduced now to feeling like a carnival barker …

Get your red-hot living trust, right here … step right up, ma’am, a free chicken dinner with every trust and a bottle of wine with every will …

Here’s the bottom line: if you go back to the seminar circuit now, you’ll never get the freedom, the joy or the reward of scaling properly to a seven-figure law firm.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

While most estate planning and elder lawyers are dragging themselves back onto the seminar circuit, a small handful of smart lawyers are quietly building seven-figure incomes without ever hosting a single event … without giving up even one more evening with their family to talk about living trusts with a roomful of strangers.

They are working with clients they love. Clients who need and want their service … and who pay premium fees to work with them.

And they’re doing all of this while enjoying life … and without blowing up their overhead, hiring more staff … or feeling like a carnival barker.

How are they doing it?

If you watched our webinar, Five Steps to Seven Figures in Estate Planning and Elder Law, you already know the strategy.

The Estate Planning Marketing Hamster Wheel

Estate planning attorney on a hamster wheel

One of the most frustrating aspects of estate planning marketing is the toll it often takes on the attorneys and their personal lives. It’s not just about serving clients … which, honestly is stressful enough. It’s about managing referral relationships, staying in touch and making each one feel valued and special … carving out time for lunch meetings …

Or … it’s driving all over your market area to deliver yet another seminar or workshop … in a local restaurant, nursing home, public library or rented conference room. And it’s not just all the driving … it’s the time away from home … and even away from the office. When things go well, there’s hardly any time to get the work done, unless you stay late or go into the office on the weekend. And then, of course there’s hardly any time left to actually lead your staff, build your team or implement great new ideas.

And when things aren’t going so well … it’s the white-knuckle, gut-wrenching feeling you get when you look at the firm’s bank balance and wonder how you’re going to meet payroll or pay the office rent.

Did you know it’s that way by design?

All those self-proclaimed gurus who told you that the way to market an estate planning or elder law practice is by building your referral network and/or hosting live workshops … they set you up for this.

Those out-dated estate planning marketing strategies are designed to keep you busy, fill up your time and create a glass ceiling on your income.

It does not have to be like this.

The key to scaling your practice and taking back your life is to LEVERAGE YOUR TIME.

The Untold Story of the Fastest Growing Estate Planning Law Firms

This guy on Facebook keeps bragging about his clients who have the “fastest growing law firms” in America. Everything he writes is about how this or that small law firm is growing 60 percent or 100 percent … or more.

When marketing an estate planning law firm, growing too fast can be deadly.
Growing too fast can be deadly for an estate planning or elder law firm.

But here’s what he fails to mention: That kind of rapid growth comes at a cost.

Top line sales growth is deceptive. More sales means more cost. Without marketing and sales systems in place to scale efficiently and boost owner profit, a rapidly growing law firm becomes a cash-eating monster.

One of the lawyers whose firm was listed in the top 500 fastest growing of 2018 recently shared with me, like Paul Harvey, the rest of the story.

Behind that breakneck growth is a law firm that practically destroyed personal finances and threatened family relationships. Vendors who went unpaid. Sleepless nights and stressful decisions. A second mortgage on the family home.

Your estate planning or elder law firm needs more than rapid growth. Top-line sales alone won’t fix what’s broken in a small law firm. Sure, your success depends on getting new clients. But profitability and quality of life depend on how you get and serve them!

Referral-based marketing and estate planning seminars and workshops have failed estate and elder lawyers. These strategies can drive top-line revenue, but the costs are too high … especially at scale.

The fall-out? You’ve seen it, the statistics on lawyer well-being don’t lie. Depression, divorce, substance abuse, even suicide. And far too many good attorneys leaving the profession because, as one lawyer recently confessed to me, “increasingly, I hate practicing law.”

The bottom line: if you don’t fix your marketing and client acquisition systems, rapid growth just means you fail faster.

It doesn’t have to be this way. While most estate and elder lawyers are struggling with long hours, rising costs and dwindling profits, a small handful of smart attorneys are quietly taking back their lives, enjoying their clients and finally getting paid what they deserve … without buying anyone lunch or hustling from workshop to seminar and back again.

They are serving the exact clients they want, with efficient systems that build profitability and freedom. They don’t have bloated marketing budgets and they’re not over-staffed. They have the freedom to enjoy their evenings, weekends and vacations with systems that keep working even when they’re not.

Imagine finally paying yourself a healthy salary and profit distribution … consistently … with more freedom and joy in your lifestyle and your law firm.
